NOC E-Newsletter: i-Mode leaves content industry scratching its head

Exceptionally good revenue share, easy and fast to use and backed by some very slick TV advertising surely O2's i-Mode service rolled out last month is the boon that everyone in the premium content space has been longing for to really get the mobile content market going?

Well, the present take up and coverage of UK's 3G network isn't as strong as its oversees competitors. Expect a lot of business customers to say - where's my coverage. The proof will be in the future strength of this countries 3G rollout!

Vonage to sell Wi-Fi phone | Tech News on ZDNet: "Vonage to sell Wi-Fi phoneBy Marguerite Reardon, CNET News.com

Vonage will announce on Tuesday the availability of its long-anticipated portable Wi-Fi phone that allows users to use their Vonage IP telephony when they're connected to any public hot spot.
Vonage already offers a softphone client, which users can download from the Web site to turn their laptops into Vonage phones. But now the company will sell a handset called the F1000 manufactured by UTStarcom, which will offer Vonage's voice over IP (VoIP) service over any public 802.11b network.
The phone is configured to allow customers to use existing Vonage call features, such as three-way calling, caller ID and voice mail. Phones will also have phone book favorites with distinctive ring options including silent, vibrate and selectable ring tones. Users will also be able to configure and save Wi-Fi profiles for easy connectivity. The F1000's battery offers about five hours of talk time and up to 50 to 100 hours of standby, Vonage said.
The service will be available for free to any Vonage customer. Handsets can be purchased starting Tuesday from the Vonage Web site for about $80 after an instant rebate.
Wi-Fi phones combine two very hot technologies--Wi-Fi and VoIP, which lets Internet connections double as extremely inexpensive phone lines. Typically, VoIP subscribers use a wired phone line, whether a home phone or any number of phones in an office setting. But many service providers, such as Vonage and EarthLink, see an opportunity to create wireless versions of their services using Wi-Fi. Introducing the appropriate VoIP serv"

NEC's Mobile Internet Platform selected by O2

NEC says that it has supplied the Mobile Internet Platform for O2's forthcoming i-mode service. O2's i-mode operations are scheduled to start this autumn in the UK and Ireland. "We are pleased with NEC as the provider of our i-mode platform, which we believe will offer our customers a whole range of new data services when we launch - furthering O2's data services leadership position in our markets," said Dave Williams, Group CTO of O2.

Kenji Takano, Managing Director of NEC Europe said, "NEC is forging strategic relationships with mobile operators and is reinforcing its mobile business to create new business opportunities for operators in Europe and in other regions of the world through increased mobile usage. In order to contribute to the development of new mobile services, NEC is rolling out attractive i-mode services with the service platform."

O2 is currently serving nearly 25 million subscribers in the UK, Ireland and Germany. Currently, 26% of O2's revenues are generated by data services.

I hope NEC is up to the job - but I'm pleased a long term player is behind i-mode

Excellent idea - I think nokia as well as sony have not taken IM strongly enough. This is now a killer item.

On another strand - ipod killer - well if you cannot beat IPOD in terms of offering navigation like it - well voice activated tracks is the way forward. Offering more storage to take the voice commands sa saying something like "The Killers - tracks 1,2,3,5" is faster than dialing baby -yeah!

Tech news and insider stories for the IT industry - the i-kew blog: "World's biggest hacker?
Never trust a law-maker who says: 'This law will only be used in certain circumstances.'
When it was first decided to pass laws against 'hacking into' remote computers, some of us opposed the idea. I remember attending a debate at Imperial College with a (then Conservative) MP, Emma Nicholson - who made the case for a law: that it would be used only when people caused damage, and not as a way of putting experimenters in jail."

Interesting article on Gary McKinnon and the US laws which not only effect the UK's citizens - but also businesses. As our laws are getting more and more akin to the US right of way :-D, so too are small examples like this are being avoided by the press.

Telecoms.com

Telecoms.com: "Hutchison downplays 3 spin off rumors

Hong Kong conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa today said that it had no immediate plans to float either of its UK or Italian flagship 3G operations. In a statement this morning, the company said that whilst plans are being made to put in place appropriate new capital structures for the Italian and UK 3G businesses in a bid to will maximise their value contribution, 'the company has no concrete plan, no application or submission to any stock exchange has been filed and no sponsor has been appointed, for a spin-off of either of the group's Italy or UK telecommunications businesses.'
The 3 Group is expected to become self-financing in the 2005-2006 period, and Hutchison said it would explore the feasibility and possibility to spin-off either or both such businesses at a time when it is considered appropriate and in the interests of the company to do so." I think come the budget 3 might have to think about it. You cannot just throw commission and get a big take up of network usage and not expect to take public money forever.

LONDON - Media buyers predict that ITV1's audience share could slip almost three percentage points to just 20% by 2007, the year before digital TV switchover begins, although some believe the picture could get much worse."

I thought they could just loose them because ITV is, IMHO not very viewer friendly. I remember when ITV was making some really cool programmes like Robin of Sherwood - and they used to show BattleStar Galactica. Now, looking to tonights programmes we have... ermmm... *switch*

Survey against cellphones on planes

Survey against cellphones on planes: "Survey against cellphones on planes
Frazzled nerves from constant phone chatter, trouble hearing emergency announcements, increased 'air rage' - all of these were identified by air travelers as good reasons for the USA's government to retain the current prohibition against airborne cell phone use, according to a new poll.
Sixty-three percent of the survey participants wanted to keep cell phone restrictions in place, while only 21 percent said it's time to let people talk on their phones during flights, survey results showed.
The poll, sponsored by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA and the National Consumers League, was conducted as the Federal Communications Commission moves ahead with a rule-making process aimed at lifting its ban on cell phones and other portable electronic devices in the air."

I guess the main problem would be one of billing - ITMS isn't going to be cheap anyway. The main difference is in places like USA and Russia. I think in terms of European travel and cheap flights to other countries - hey no food, cramped seats and cheap flights mobile phone use will increase travel on airlines - you know you can book a hotel via WAP/GPRS or talk to friends/family you're going to meet. If there's a problem, like on a cramped train - you tell them don't you? Trouble with bad language on the phone - thats for cabin staff to deal with right?

In a bid to increase its adoption as an enterprise search standard, Google is instituting a new licensing scheme that will give enterprises more search volume at a lower cost.
The new licensing, announced Wednesday, chiefly affects the Google Mini appliance, effectively doubling the Google Mini's document capacity while nearly halving the price.
The Google Mini now will be able to search as many as 100,000 documents at a company, up from 50,000 under the previous licensing, at a cost of $2,995, down from $4,995 under the previous licensing. Those prices include one year of support. The price for the second year of support drops from $2,500 to $995. "

Siemens has launched a 'rugged' phone designed for outdoor use. Thanks to the unique Siemens Protection System, it can easily withstand dust, splashes and shocks. The phone is protected by an integrated aluminum frame with solid rubber cushions on the sides of the casing and still it only weighs just 110 grams. Especially the display is protected by the metal frame from scratches and breaking. Detachable rubber seals also keep dust and splashes off the built-in 1.3 megapixel digital camera and other particularly sensitive parts."

Nice offering from Siemens, but as with Nokias rugged phone - did it take off? Maybe the price of this and MP3/272k features makes this a better deal

Chinas search engine censoring continues: "China's search engine censorship continues
Google and Yahoo in unholy alliances.
For several years the Chinese regime has been oppressing their citizens by censoring what they get to access online. Now internet giants like Google and Yahoo help facilitate this oppression in order to gain access to the Chinese market.
By Lars Vge, InternetBrus
Search engine censorship
(February 27 2005) One of the strategies of the Chinese regime has been to cut off access to international search engines like Google and Altavista from time to time.
Now they also censor in a way that makes it impossible to get results for certain search phrases. This is not only the case with government approved search engines like the popular Baidu.com.
The scary thing is that the regime has succeeded in putting such pressure on global search engines like Google and Yahoo that they have conceded to make certain information inaccessible in some of their Chinese versions.
The organization Reporters Without Frontiers (RSF) has reported about this on at least three occasions during the last six months. RSF has demanded that Google clean up its act, but this has not been heeded in any way.
The case of Zhao Ziyang
The latest victim of this search engine censoring is the recently deceased Zhao Ziyang, who was Chinas leader from 1980 to 1987.
Perhaps you do not remember him and you are not meant to either. He was arrested and placed under house arrest. This was because he had, though admittedly too late, tried to stop the Chinese militarys intervention on the Tiananmen Square in 1989. The intervention resulted in the massacre of hundreds of Chinese students.
When Zhao passed away after almost 16 years of house arrest, the Chinese regime didnt want his death to cause any commotion like demonstrations at his funer"

Well, don't forget that it's Western Tech Companies who are instituting this technology. It won't be long before the war on terror will enable governments to censor pages that insite violence and hatred. Of course there's pages that are just pure hate, others of pages that might tell a different version of the truth. But of course ban these pages - they are bad and anti-Bush/Blair. Shameful!

Click Fraud: What It Is, How to Fight It
By Kevin Lee
February 18, 2005

There's a crisis brewing in this industry. Poor click quality has the potential to hit marketers hard and to negatively affect search engines. It manifests itself in many ways, including as network click fraud, competitive click fraud, and mislabeled traffic.

Competitive Click Fraud

Competitive click fraud is a big problem for smaller businesses, particularly when the service provided is of great value (or great lifetime value), resulting in high CPCs (define). Lawyers, doctors, accountants, IT consultants, and, of course, search engine marketing (SEM)/SEO (define) firms all bid in high CPC marketplaces. The higher the CPC, the greater the effect a competitor can have on a specific budget.

Impression Fraud

Impression fraud is the newest threat. Google and other engines rely on an AdRank method of determining an ad's relevance. A competitor pauses his campaign while a sudden fraudulent surge in impressions on your keywords occurs. All these impressions occur with zero clicks. AdRanks for competing ads, including yours, drop through the floor. The competitor waits a bit, then swoops in with a normal ad with a high CTR. Your campaign is entrenched with keywords that are disabled or seriously crippled. So, Google makes an ad position decision based on fake data."

Very interesting points raised - I think the Impression Fraud area will get bigger and bigger in Q2 this year. how to combat this? Better tracking and I also think the Search Engines should also have named contacts to resolve this issue. At present the sole onus is on the web-master or company. Thus iff you have a bad SEO/emarketing agency wrecking your online PoP, forms of redress especially for small online retailers has not been addressed.

Let's face it, shopping for print ink is not a highly engaging process. It's something you want to get done and over with quickly. Plus, anyone clicking from a pop-ad isn't a highly engaged shopper. It's an impulse click, and it's just as easy to impulsively click away again. Which is exactly what 72% of visitors were doing."

An excellent idea to convert - navigation, content, refine, checkout - grat throwback to websites post the dotcom boom. Enjoyable reading - could be a little more detailed
ClickZ Experts on Online Advertising Technology: "Reaching the cyborg consumer means recognizing the realities of their lives: always on, always connected, socially engaged, networked, multitasking, consuming multiple media, and actively controlling their lifestyles and connection to information. For marketers, reaching these folks means paying attention to a few key areas:

* Networks. These folks are hooked in to other people. The image of the lone, socially disconnected computer geek is wrong. From eBay and Google Groups to blogs and discussion boards, they're connected. And because they're connected, news travels fast, often through networks that are tough for marketers to control.

Viral marketing taps into this reality (for some great examples, check out ViralMeister ). Recognizing new forms of that communication such as blogs and podcasting have as much effect as 'official' publications is important to tap into this mindset. Don't think of blogs just as a communications outlet for your company. Recognize bloggers in your space are major influencers and should be treated as such. Also recognize that PR efforts are even tougher to control than ever, now that anyone with a Blogger account can become a 'media outlet.' Bad companies have nowhere to hide anymore.

* Lifestyle. The genius of Apple's strategy is it isn't about a product, but a lifestyle. The point of entry may be the iPod, but soon the iPod users uses Apple's iTunes to manage their music, buys music on the iTunes Store (over 1 million songs per day at last count), and, Apple hopes, eventually uses Macs to hook everything together. Whether that will happen remains to be seen, but figuring out how to create a product or service that fits into the cyborg consumer's lifestyle definitely seems to work. Heck, you don't need to be a technology to use this method. Consider the marketing of the Atkins diet if you want another example.

* Control. Connected consumers are partially defined by an ability to control their world. From the music they listen to and the games they play to videos they watch, news they read, and people they talk to, cyborg consumers use technology for control. They like control, and anything that interferes with their sense of control is viewed as bad and dangerous. Just look at spam and spyware if you need examples of how consumers react to marketing efforts that try to take control away. Respecting the need for control and fitting into their lifestyle pays dividends.

* Who, not where. The explosion of mobile connectivity and (as Giesler puts it) 'technotrancendance' through immersive technologies means we need to market to the person, not the place where she happens to be. The Internet blurs the line between work and home, allowing us to conduct personal errands at work and ensuring we're never really away from work. Mobile technology such as cell phones and messaging devices mean we're always connected to our social and business lives, no matter where we are. For marketers, paying attention to targeting the person rather than the person's location (home, work, school, etc.) is increasingly important now that consumers can connect to media pretty much anywhere they want."

I think good marketing departments undertake the above points. Personally, i think the lifestyle factor is the hardest to engage as it is influenced by control, who and not where and networks. Well, we'll see eh!
ClickZ Experts on Strategic Advertising Issues: "Have you been to an urban caf lately? It's not uncommon for a third of the occupants to be sitting in front of their laptops, completely engrossed, day and night. Ever wonder what they're doing? They're being virtual. We all know nobody knows you're a 'dog' on the Internet. What's equally important is nobody knows where that 'dog' is."

Is the food in the dog? Nice intro, goes on the describe the attributes of the virtual world.. come on neuromancer

InfoWorld: Symbian aims downmarket with smart phone software: February 02, 2005: By : NETWORKING : PLATFORMS: "Symbian aims downmarket with smart phone software
Symbian puts renewed emphasis on security with low-cost phones

By Peter Sayer, IDG News Service
February 02, 2005

Symbian is taking its operating software for smart phones downmarket with a new focus on high-volume, low-cost phones for the mass market, and a renewed emphasis on security, it said Wednesday."

Excellent news, Symbian rocks in Europe, as stated in previous posts it's had it's ups and downs recently. Pity. But this is cool, smart phones will start to be picked up - lowering the costs of OS's and development. I can't wait for open source OS on mobiles, but I guess overriding something the SIM does may complicate open source with the network operators (especially if it connects via highspeed bluetooth to a local Wireless Network for free VOIP or text (via ICQ or SMS post for free portals).

Symbian Targets Mass Market Smartphones With New Operating System: "Symbian Targets Mass Market Smartphones With New Operating System

LONDON -(Dow Jones)- Symbian PLC (SYN.YY), the mobile phone operating system developer, Wednesday launched version 9 of its operating system.

Symbian OSv9 will target the mass market for smartphones, the company said, with the aim of producing the advanced phones in higher volumes and a lower cost.

The system will lower licensee development costs and accelerate the time to market for smaller, less expensive and even more capable Symbian-based smartphones. It said the platform is suited to music playing and other digital content, as well as mega-pixel camera phones.

Symbian OSv9 phones are already in development, with product launches anticipated during the second half of 2005, the company said.

Symbian is majority owned by Nokia Corp. (NOK), while Siemens AG (SI), LM Ericsson Telephone Co. AS (ERICY), Sony Corp. (SNE), Samsung Electronics Ltd. (000830.SE) and Matsushita Electrical Industrial Co. (MC) all have minority stakes.

Company Web site: Http://www..com"

Good idea, I personally think Symbian is the way to go with cellphones, its customisable and you can edit things yourself with little programs that give it real value. probably upgrading the OS to be more resistant to the BT viruses that are hitting the industry - which is a shame.
The heart pacemaker that sends an SMS: "The heart pacemaker that sends an SMS

The medical supplies firm, Biotronik has announced the first implantation of the Stratos LV-T - a heart pacemaker that comes with a GSM phone built inside. The pacemaker system with Home Monitoring function was implanted in a 42-year-old male patient with severe congestive heart failure on January 10, 2005 at the Free University of Amsterdam, Netherlands. The operation was performed under the direction of Dr. Carel de Cock, the Director of Cardiology."

Wow.. really good idea... as long as it don't interfere with the device. No good if you have a heart attack in a hospital or on a plane :-D There again, who needs a doctor in flight @-D

Revisiting Google Censorship In Germany & France: "Revisiting Google Censorship In Germany & France

Google Blogoscope updates sites previously identified as censored by Google in Germany and France in its Sites Google Censors post. You can see how many pages are shown in Google.com then compare to what's isn't showing at Google Germany or Google France.

The sites are all removed due to national laws in those countries, I believe. Google Blogoscope asks for Google to tell people when material has been removed, in the way they do for copyright reasons. John Battelle and I both asked for the same thing, in the past.

For John's views, check out Google News And China. From me, Got To Censor Search Listings? Why Not Disclose? explains how Google disclosure of copyright-driven removals in the US works, how no disclosure of spam removals is noted and how Google and all search engines have removed material for various reasons and should come up with a way to identify this. My China Blocks Google News -- So Bring On The Disclosure also coves the issue."

Well, it was about to come about soon, i thinik it's sad of Google to not add a disclosure policy saying who or why stuff is being removed. Well, seeing as most of the UK's international Internet access is fed through GCHQ (spy center for America - I mean the UK), soon pages from international sources will just have 404 errors or redirects to other sources.

What's New In Marketing - E-Marketing Insights: "E-Marketing Insights"

Great insight here and great article surrounding emarketing.
More mobile phones than people in the UK: "More mobile phones than people in the UK

Recently collated Christmas sales figures are revealing that the number of mobile phones currently in circulation in the UK is greater than its population size. The new total is based on the number of contract and prepay subscriptions and is further evidence of the significant mobile data growth witnessed in the past 2 years, coming after just 11 years of digital mobile cellular services being available in the UK."

Well this kind of makes sence... how many businesses make sure their employees cannot use their mobile phones for personal use, and then cannot use 3g/blackberry devices for voice tariffs? As people wise up to PAYG sims for other countries people will be buying GSM phones and using these in other countries. At present, people signed up to T-mobile, 3, Orange will find their phone won't work with another providers network - 02 and Voda yes you can get cheap tariffs PAYG sims rather than paying stoopid amounts for roaming. So take up of handsets and Sims would be cheaper abroad, or people buy GSM and travel with them (as a spare handset). Of course the killer question is upgrading - do you pay or port to another providers SIM and then port back again.

O2 falls for Blackberry 'Charm' | The Register: "The handset also features a quad-band GSM/GPRS radio, Bluetooth
connectivity for headsets and in-car systems, polyphonic ringtone
support, 4MB of SRAM and 32MB of Flash memory. There's a 'large and
bright, high-resolution' colour LCD, and battery power sufficient for
four hours' talk time and over eight days on stand-by."

Very nice handset by the looks of it, i prefer the sleek black to Voda's grey, but hey, powerful phone with all the trimmings. Only 32mb of flash memory which really isn't a lot in this day and age and for a business user - that's nothing at all as there's other phones on the market like the K700i with 64mb and the D500 with 80mb.
Google Blogoscoped: "'[Google Inc.] looks set to launch a free telephone service that links users via a broadband internet connection using a headset and home computer.

The technology that will enable Google to move in on the market has been around for some time. Software by the London-based company, Skype, has been downloaded nearly 54 million times around the world but no large telecommunication firms have properly exploited it. (...)

Although Google is reluctant to talk about its plans, the logical use of such a network would be to help to support a new telephone service'
-- Elizabeth Judge, Google gears up for a free-phone challenge to BT (TimesOnline), January 24, 2005"

hehe... nice one, skype is a eally good program eventually it will be prone to exploits, like Mozilla as people download and use it by the hundreds. What will happen is telecom providers will be trying to make a small take on line rental. Oh well. Will skype be more open source and thus have updates as and when to keep it secure? Probably not.
Google Raises Word Limit to 32: "Google greatly advances its web search by raising the word limit to 32 words. Previously, only up to 10 words were allowed. While some may never have wanted to cross the 10-word limit, it can be crucial to different tasks:"

nice move - though I've used upto 10 before this can help with some really indepth research I've only ever used Lexis Nexis for.
SimWorks news and press releases "Once a user installs Gavno they may find it difficult if not impossible to repair. The instability that it introduces into the phone's operating system can be so severe that it effectively disables all applications on the phone and often results in the phone continually rebooting itself."

Bad news, but I think this one will be nasty.. pity it's hitting nokia and it's new breath of fresh air business/high end consumer phones. Well, maybe it will clue people up to be more engaged with their phone and think about stuff they put on it as well as preventative measures. Personally, I cannot wait til encryption 'over the air'.

Yahoo! News - Professor's Saturn Experiment Forgotten: "Professor's Saturn Experiment Forgotten

Add to My Yahoo! Science - AP

By NICHOLAS K. GERANIOS, Associated Press Writer

SPOKANE, Wash. - David Atkinson spent 18 years designing an experiment for the unmanned space mission to Saturn. Now some pieces of it are lost in space. Someone forgot to turn on the instrument Atkinson needed to measure the winds on Saturn's largest moon."

The Winds of change. Bad news story, pity as many excellent space exploration programs seem to fail due to error or communication. Saturn's always intriged me and finding out more about it would have been a major revelation.
Orange at a crossroads - report: "Orange at a crossroads - report

After a decade of growth, Orange, one of the world's largest mobile phone operators, is at a strategic crossroads, where it faces the prospect of slower growth and diminishing revenues unless it pushes for international expansion, taking advantage of markets where it currently has a presence and expanding into other neighboring markets as opportunities present themselves, reports In-Stat. How Orange acts in the next year will likely determine its direction and growth prospects for the next decade."

A new report out - but by the looks of things it needs some more substance. I guess something offered by Informa may be of more interest. www.telecoms.com

Latent Semantic Indexing: "LATENT SEMANTIC INDEXING

Taking a Holistic View

Regular keyword searches approach a document collection with a kind of accountant mentality: a document contains a given word or it doesn't, with no middle ground. We create a result set by looking through each document in turn for certain keywords and phrases, tossing aside any documents that don't contain them, and ordering the rest based on some ranking system. Each document stands alone in judgement before the search algorithm - there is no interdependence of any kind between documents, which are evaluated solely on their contents."

Huge document on how Google works... very sizable article, very interesting but, very long!

Forrester Research evaluates US mobile data service providers: "Forrester Research evaluates US mobile data service providers

Over the past two and half years, the 2.5/3G mobile data services market in the US has grown from nothing to a market worth an estimated 1.5 billion dollars by the end of 2006. A new report from Forrester Research assesses the progress of the major US business services providers -- AT&T Wireless, Sprint PCS, and Verizon Wireless -- and finds that the market is still anyone's game."

Good news for US market, sad news for the UK market. However @ present Europe leads in terms of text and other value services.

Love it, hate it. Tribal launches Marmite site to delight and entertain on the web : E-consultancy.com

I love it.. excellent idea from the really marketing lead company. i still think it's brand lead only... for veggies this product rawks...
Are You Getting The Most From Your Meta Tags

Excellent advice that I could not give better about using metatags to your advantage. I do think the empathsis is rather big here. in my experience the KEYWORD war frenzy is a thing of the past. The main search engines have shifted thier algorithms more on linking, traffic and relevance.

InfoWorld: Samsung's latest cell phone senses 3-D movements: January 13, 2005: By : NETWORKING:Samsung Electronics has developed a cell phone that can sense movement in three dimensions and respond to those movements by performing actions such as dialling numbers or ending a call, the company said Thursday.

Shaking the phone twice will end a call or delete a message. Other movement functions programmed into the handset include a sharp move to the right or left to tell the built-in MP3 music player to skip forward or back a track, while drawing a 'O' or 'X' in the air makes the phone say 'Yes' or 'No' out loud, the company said."

Cool idea, but I think the voice to SMS text is a cool idea, i think somethign which uses shaking movement is going to harder for handsets to be insured. I guess it's like insuraing "Whack a squirrel" machine @ the circus against denting!

I'm sure the shake facility will be enjoyed by everyone running for a train or running while calling friends. I think spacial technology is just a run on from character recognition. A bluetooth pen which senses movement would be a lot better thaan the handset being moved.
Secret Service Reveals Its Records Stolen By Hacker: "Secret Service Reveals Its Records Stolen By Hacker

WASHINGTON (AP)--A hacker broke into a wireless carrier's network over at least seven months and read e-mails and personal computer files of hundreds of customers, including the U.S. Secret Service agent investigating the hacker, the government said Wednesday...Cavicchia,.. won the Secret Service's medal of valor for his actions in the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks,"

hahhaa.... well if anything this shows that personal mobile voice should always have encryption anyway, it's becuase governments want things easy, that this lack of secrurty happens. Perhaps all security personnel should not get given free voice calls, but only PAYG. Would also cut back on expenditure on the war on terror!
Testing 3G networks using Nokia handsets: "The Nokia 6630 subscriber phone is one of the most popular 3G phones being sold by European and Asian operators. X-TEL is proud to be one of the first to offer leading edge drive test solutions based on Nokia's 6630 3G mobile phone," said James Richie, CEO of X-TEL. "X-TEL now supports more than 40 test phones and scanners to ensure that the operators are testing the networks with the phones actually used in the networks."

This is the phone, if it was in little britian "I want that one". Very nice phone indeed. I hope symbian will in its rawer form clue up handset users into being a lot more teckie. This handset rawks though... nice 1.4mp cam!

Skype: ""

WHOOT, the new version of SKYPE is out. Better MSN like functionality and a host more (but aminly on the messaging side). Have to get this installed for various divisions in the company. Wish me luck!

ClickZ Experts on Paid Search Strategies: "I'm sure some of you would love to get more funds allocated for all types of search marketing, both paid and organic. Pay-per-click (PPC) search return on investment (ROI) is completely under your control, whether directly or through an outside provider. So pitching PPC search to your boss, investors, even the team that would manage the campaigns is fairly easy."

Very interesting article that outlines PPC and natural Search SEO when you're hoping to put this to your boss. Found it very clear, outlining marketing issues and SEO in general I'd not found elsewhere.
MSN Malaysia - Mobile Central: Nokia 7700 review & price list.
Great selection of phones coming out of East Asia. It's a pity Symbian compatibility with accessories hasn't been taken more seriously in the far east. Great reviews and reasonably good specs. Recommended
Click here for great deals from Dell!

The VKB gets a mention on SlashDot. Very interesting piece of equipment, especially when space is at a premium.
Samsung launches speech-to-SMS phone | The Register: "CES 2005 Samsung Electronics has
developed a mobile phone that automatically converts speech into text.
Rather than rely on cramming words in tiny fonts onto a small screen,
users can just dictate. Samsung's new technology - VoiceMode - is
incorporated in the new Samsung p207 phone, which will initially be
shipped to the US."

Excellent - at last some functionality that matches users desires. Although when 2G has had its day, i guess leaving a voicemessage will be the cheap version of texting :-D Sounds promising from Samsung who've not embraced BlueTooth as a viable concept with their D500's!
Graff Forums - Computers - Unsecure networks Google = fun

There's a new craze on the net.. looking into other people's web-cams. It's another one of those things where web masters should look who's accessing off site data and securing it. Seems like fun, though doubt the legality of it. All the cams can be found via a google search!

MSN Malaysia - Mobile Central: Not a bad page on MSN with reasonably informed reviews. Only trouble is, are they really upto date with Sony Phones?
